Just Getting Into 2m SSB or Still Thinking About It?
Here's a a few points on what you will need as far as equipment to get on the air. After going about this wrong myself and wasting some money, I feel these are the most important steps to follow and ensure success on 2mSSB!
1. You'll need an all mode radio capable of transmitting on 2mSSB or one of the higher bands such as 432mHz. Here's a few suggestions as
well as some older models available on QRZ, QTH or EBay.
2. The next thing is the most important, your antenna. Don't try to just get
by here. On a budget? Save then, but buy an antenna with a minimum of
12 Elements or more. Put up the biggest antenna you can based on your
location and budget. The longer the boom and more elements, the bigger
the gain. And mount it horizontal not vertical. Put up a omni-directional
antenna for local contacts to improve 360 degree hearing.
3. Get the right coax to connect your antenna to your radio. Feedline loss
is an important factor on higher bands. Use LMR 400 as a minimum!
LMR 600 or 1/2 - 7/8 inch hardline is even better. Don't think RG-8 or 58
coax is going to get the job done here. Spend the little extra and be done.
4. Add an amplifier when you can. This will increase your signal and
increase the distance you can work. Solid State Amplifiers in the range of 160 - 200 watts and above are your best choices. Look for one with a
good pre-amp that works. Or add a seperate mast mounted preamp.
Make sure your power supply will support your amplifier.
5. "Click Here" to learn how to use the tools on the main page of this site. Remember that your location, station setup, band conditions and terrain between you and the stations you will be working, will determine your success! The excitement in working "Weak Signal" is worth it.
6. Don't expect to hear activity 24/7 on the band. The best
times to listen and call CQ are early morning/evening and during contests. You'll listen to alot of "White Noise", but
you will make some contacts as long as you stick to it. Listen for beacons in your area. Here are the links to watch:
